The spectacular Costa Quebrada (Broken Coast) north of Liencres east to Santander is well worth a visit, both for naturalists and photographers! It is one of few places in Europe where a layered sedimentary type of rock called "flysch" surfaces.

En route to Peña Vieja (2,617 m) I stopped at El Collabo de la Canalona (2,440 m) to enjoy the views (here direction SW). The path on the lower left leads to the Fuente Dé cable car station.

Las Médulas is a landscape created by hydraulic gold mining. It was the most important gold mine of the Roman Empire. Estimations of the amount of gold mined here run from 1.6-3 million kilo. The mining was very destructive to the landscape but also left us a spectacular view.
